Not what was actually expected, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton’s Super Bowl LVIII performance was slammed as the “worst ever.”
According to PEOPLE, Stefani and Shelton took to the stage to perform their new duet Purple Irises while at the Super Bowl LVIII TikTok Tailgate event in Las Vegas. The track seems to reflect on the couple’s real-life relationship. The lyrics read, “But if someone comes along and tries to / Love you like I do / Don’t know what I’d do / Don’t want to lose you,” she sings, later adding: “No, I never knew a love like this. Now we’re picking / Purple irises.”

However, although the song is sweet and loving, its debut performance was not so much. X users quickly took to the social media platform to voice their criticisms. “Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton are on CBS right now singing what I can only describe as the actual worst song I have ever heard,” one X user wrote.
Another X user declared, “I know Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani are really in love cause I don’t want to hear this s— at all.”
Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton previously wrote and sang other duets, including Nobody But You, Happy Anywhere, and You Make It Feel Like Christmas.
Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton Share More Details About New Single ‘Purple Irises’
In a press release from Waren Music Nashville, Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton opened up about their new duet Purple Irises.
“Purple Irises is a song that comes from the idea that when you plant something you are planting hope and watching love grow,” Stefani explained. “Weathering all the different seasons of growth. We are in this together, we planted the seeds together and we are growing together.”
Shelton chimed in and said that he and Stefani loved the song so much. “It’s a song Gwen wrote with a couple of friends of hers, and I fell in love with it the first time I heard it,” Shelton said. “She knew there was something different about it and asked me to come in and sing with her. My longtime producer, Scott Hendricks, produced it. And Gwen’s been wanting to work with him for a long time now. It’s turned into this really cool and different song. That can live anywhere.”
Purple Irises is available now at all digital retailers. Along with the release of the new track, Stefani is set to perform alongside her former No Doubt bandmates. They’ll perform at the 2024 Coachella Music Festival. “It just happened so fast,” she told PEOPLE recently. “And that’s my favorite kind of thing to happen. We haven’t really figured out the next steps of how we’re going to do this, but we’re just all so excited.”
