Back in 2019, when Kelly Clarkson and John Legend were both Coaches on The Voice, Clarkson appeared on Legend’s YouTube series, “Trailer Talk,” to perform a gorgeous duet with him: Nat King Cole’s “Smile.”
Legend referred to Nat King Cole as one of his ”biggest influences,” which is why he and Clarkson chose to sing Cole’s classic tune ”Smile.” During their cover, Clarkson crooned the introduction lyrics while Legend played the piano. Legend then took over, singing with a heavenly tone.
Listen to their lovely rendition here.
Clarkson is certainly familiar with the song, as she performed in again in November 2023 as a Kellyoke segment on The Kelly Clarkson Show. During her solo version, she sang in a warm, cozy tone that’ll make you want to curl up by a fireplace. Check it out here.

”Smile” by Nat King Cole lyrics
Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though it’s breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you’ll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You’ll see the sun come shining through for you
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what’s the use of crying?
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what’s the use of crying?
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile
