Jennifer Love Hewitt made her first red carpet appearance in four years this week, but her return to the spotlight wasn’t as glamorous as she may have hoped.
The 39-year-old actress took to Instagram Stories on Tuesday — just one day after she attended Fox’s upfronts — to apologize for looking ‘wrecked’ on the red carpet, admitting that she wasn’t prepared for such a long day and ended up looking like a ‘hot mess.’
‘Nobody tells me the day is going to be like 12 hours long and that the humidity is going to be almost 100 per cent in New York City,’ she says in the series of clips. ‘So I just have to apologize.’

The mother-of-two donned a sleek black suit that she accessorized with a delicate gold necklace, but the elegant outfit ended up working against her because of the heat.
Wearing a black suit, not a good idea,’ she admits. ‘Not wearing enough hair spray and teasing in my hair, also a bad a idea. I just have to apologize for how wrecked I look in all the pictures that have come out.
‘I was literally melting by the time I got to the red carpet. I was honestly melting,’ she continues, admitting that she felt she should have achieved ‘baller status’ with an amazing look at the event.
‘Like, my hair was flat, my make-up was running off my face, and I look like I had completely forgotten I was an actress in this business who is supposed to look [amazing] when you step on the red carpet.’
It was revealed on Monday that Jennifer has joined the cast of Ryan Murphy’s Fox series 9-1-1 for season two, and she was at the upronts to promote the show.

The trip to New York City was also the first time she and her husband, Brian Hallisay, had flown with their children Autumn, four, and Atticus, two.
‘I had not slept all night. My toddlers were up all night,’ she explains. ‘It was our first time traveling with them, which is a whole other thing.’
Going back to her disastrous red carpet appearance, she adds: ‘But truly that is not what I am going to look like on the show.
‘I am going to have make-up on my face. I’m not going to be sweating,’ she insists. ‘I am not going to be overwhelmed by being in front of a red carpet and crews again. Honestly, I apologize. I should have really gotten it together.’
Jennifer will be playing Maddie, the sister of Buck (Oliver Stark), on 9-1-1, and it is her first time working since she has become a mom.
‘It is going to be a whole new learning thing,’ she explains, adding that she is ‘really grateful for the opportunity.’

The actress says she’s starting her boxing workouts again and ‘getting in great shape mentally, physically, and emotionally for all that is ahead’ when they start the season.
‘I’m just feeling really grateful really,’ she says. ‘Sorry for looking like a hot mess on the red carpet yesterday. I was so hot; I was literally melting.’
This isn’t the first time the actress has addressed scrutiny about her appearance to the public.
In 2007, unflattering bikini photos were released of Jennifer while she was enjoying a vacation with her former boyfriend Ross McCall.
The then 28-year-old experienced extreme scrutiny from celebrity tabloids before she released a statement on her personal blog.
She wrote: ‘To set the record straight, I’m not upset for me, but for all of the girls out there that are struggling with their body image.
‘A size 2 is not fat! Nor will it ever be. And being a size 0 doesn’t make you beautiful.
‘I know what I look like, and so do my friends and family. And like all women out there should, I love my body. To all girls with butts, boobs, hips and a waist, put on a bikini — put it on and stay strong.’
After the incident, Jennifer was more vocal about body acceptance and encouraged other celebrities to join the positivity bandwagon.
